COVID-19 Emergency Interstate Declaration permits expire on July 11, 2020 for traveling on any interstate. The Governor's COVID-19 proclamation for travel on Iowa highways continues until August 23, 2020.
On July 1, 2020, Iowa law eliminated over-dimensional permits for hay, straw, stover, or bagged livestock bedding. Legal dimensions for hauling these are 12 ft 5 inches wide, 14 ft 6 inches high and 80K with legal axle weights.

Welcome to Iowa's online permitting system (IAPS)
This site issues permits for oversize and overweight vehicles along state owned routes only. This includes Interstate, US, & IA routes. Permits for local or city routes should be obtained from those respective agencies. An oversize permit shall not be valid during the nighttime hours of sunset to sunrise unless authorized for continuous movement.
2020 Holiday Travel Restrictions
An oversize/overweight permit shall not be valid for the operation of a vehicle on the following 2020 holidays:
- Noon Friday, May 22 to 30min before sunrise on Tuesday, May 26Independence Day
- Noon Friday, July 3 to 30min before sunrise on Monday, July 6Labor Day
- Noon Friday, September 4 to 30min before sunrise on Tuesday, September 8
Holiday Office Closings
The Iowa DOT permit office will be closed on the following dates. Permits may still be applied for and even system issued during these times; however, any office processing required will be delayed.
